Newsreader was designed for long-form reading on screens, which makes it an unlikely choice for a headline the height of a doorway. It works because of one axis: optical size.
Turn the optical size up
At display sizes the optical size axis tightens spacing, sharpens contrast and slims the serifs. Left at its default, the same letters look clumsy and loose. Match the axis to the size and most of the work is done for you.
Then take tracking away
Even with the right optical size, large serif type benefits from slightly negative tracking — around minus three to four percent. Any more and the counters start to close; any less and the word stops reading as a single shape.
